Goals! Do you set them?
Much of coaching involves setting goals and making those goals realistic enough so that they are achievable. Goals provide a clear picture of the outcome that is desired. Without clear and definitive goals the forward direction can be somewhat hazy, to say the least. Without goals it is easy to just muddle through life on a daily basis with time and possible achievements slipping away. The Macquarie Dictionary defines a goal as “that towards which effort is directed; aim or end”. Goals provide an aim or an end. They supply a focal point and once a focal point is clarified the steps that are needed to reach it can be laid out in a manner that allows the attainability of each step along the journey. Reaching a desired aim, end or outcome is usually what the coach will work towards with the client. Coaching methodologies are solution focused and goal setting plays a major role in reaching a positive resolution to an issue. When thinking about the goal or goals there are a few criteria that need to be considered. A goal must be measurable and meaningful, it must be achievable, it must be realistic and responsible and a goal is best when worded simply and when it has a time frame as part of the frame of reference. This is the SMART system of goal setting. When goals are created using this methodology the steps along the way are very easily examined and it is then easy to ascertain whether changes need to be made and where. A great aspect about creating goals and working towards achieving them is that they are always changeable; they should be viewed as having flexibility and if situations arise along the path, being flexible, making changes, adapting and if necessary, re-focusing the goal leads to achieving the desired outcome. There are many methods for setting goals. This method is one and it is a very positive process. It allows for feedback and adjustments, a vital component of reaching the aim or the end. Setting goals forms a powerful sequence for exploring and building towards a desired outcome. Positive strategies can then be implemented and achievements recognised and celebrated as they are reached. One final suggestion to bear in mind when in the process of goal setting is to always use positive thoughts and language. Goals are what we want, not what we do not want.
